Arthritis Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term for more than 100 different conditions that cause joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Arthritis conditions are divided into four categories for diagnosis purposes. These categories include:

Degenerative arthritis

Degenerative arthritis, also called osteoarthritis, is the most common form of arthritis and results from wear and tear or trauma.

Inflammatory arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis is caused by inflammation that attacks your joints, including your cartilage and the soft tissues surrounding your joints. Common types include psoriatic and rheumatoid arthritis.

Infectious arthritis

Infectious arthritis is an emergency situation that develops when an infection attacks your joints and causes severe damage.

Metabolic arthritis

Metabolic arthritis occurs when crystals formed during the digestive process are deposited into your joints. Gout is the most common type.

All arthritis types present with unique signs and symptoms that aid Dr. Muschik at Access Chiropractic Center in determining your exact diagnosis.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Symptoms of arthritis can vary depending on the type of arthritis you have and which joints are affected. Common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling
  • Joint redness or warmth to touch
  • Stiffness worse in the morning
  • Pain after exercise or movement
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Joint deformity

Arthritis can cause disability if left untreated. If you experience symptoms of arthritis, get care from Dr. Muschik right away to relieve your pain and reduce joint stiffness.

How is arthritis diagnosed?

Some types of arthritis are diagnosed based on your medical history and symptoms. If Dr. Muschik suspects an inflammatory or infectious process is causing your symptoms, he refers you for blood testing to look for specific inflammatory chemicals and infections in your blood.

X-rays may also be taken to determine the severity of joint damage caused by arthritis. If you experience severe damage or pain, Dr. Muschik provides referrals to rheumatologists and orthopedists in the area for more invasive treatments.
