What Can a Chiropractor Do for My Headaches?

Migraine headaches are not all the same. They don’t all have the same cause, but they can have a deleterious impact on your daily life.  Some migraine headaches are so bad, they will leave you incapacitated for hours at a time. Medication is great, but now might be time to give chiropractic care a serious try.

Chronic or episodic headaches?

Chronic migraine headaches are severe, recurring headaches that don’t quite go away no matter what medications you try. Neurologists define migraine headaches as chronic when they occur 15 or more days per month for more than three months. Chronic migraine headaches may come with a visual aura, such as spots or jagged lines in your visual field, a throbbing pain on one side of your head, and/or a sensitivity to light, sound, and smell. They may even cause nausea, although not all do.

People who suffer from episodic migraines may have some or even all of these symptoms, but their headaches occur on fewer than 15 days per month.

When you meet with a chiropractor, they review your medical history, examine you, and try to determine what’s contributing to your migraines. For example, maybe you have tension in your neck, have high blood pressure, or have issues in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Benefits of chiropractic care for migraine headaches

If you’ve been using conventional medicine to treat your migraine headaches and aren’t getting the results you want, give chiropractic care a try. Chiropractic care focuses on ensuring your spine is properly aligned; helps to alleviate pain; and, helps to improve mobility.  Just be sure to let your chiropractor know what medications and supplements you take, so they can figure them into your profile during your intake. Some of your medicines may have side effects that are contributing to your headaches.
